For Arthur and Kay Cummings, Ferris State University isn't just a place of education; it's where their love story began. Hailing from Montrose, Michigan, Arthur initially pursued Police Administration at Mott Community College. However, the allure of Ferris State's Criminal Justice program drew him from Flint to Big Rapids. Simultaneously, Kay Cummings, with a high school background in pharmacy work, knew Ferris was the perfect fit for her.

Their time at Ferris was marked not only by academic pursuits but also vibrant extracurricular involvement. Arthur, a member of the FSU Pep Band and a resident advisor, immersed himself in campus life. Kay, an RA, assistant head resident in Bond Hall, and a Ferris Women's Tennis team member, contributed significantly to the university's sports legacy.

The turning point came in 1974 when Arthur and Kay crossed paths through mutual friends. As their connection deepened, they found solace in studying together at the library and sharing dinners at McDonald's on Sundays when the cafeteria was closed. These moments etched in their memories became cherished Ferris experiences.

Financial stability, facilitated by scholarships, defined Arthur's college years. Unburdened by financial concerns, he devoted his time to academics, volunteering, and campus activities. The impact was profound, positively influencing his grades and setting the stage for future success.

Post-graduation, Arthur ventured into law enforcement, serving in the Buena Vista Township Police Department and later the Meridian Township Police Department. A career shift led him to nuclear security, ultimately founding his security company, American Protection Bureau. Meanwhile, Kay, after excelling as a pharmacist and pharmacy manager, found herself with Walgreens in Florida due to relocation.

Despite their diverse paths, Ferris State University remained a beacon in their lives. This shared sentiment inspired Arthur to propose the creation of the Arthur R. and Kay J. Cummings Endowed Scholarship. With a keen desire to give back, the scholarship aims to financially support students in the Criminal Justice Program—reflecting the programs that enriched their Ferris experiences.

As the Cummings reflect on their journey, they offer words of encouragement to scholarship recipients: "Make the best of your opportunity. Take advantage of it and use it to accomplish your dreams and goals. When all that works out, then you will have the opportunity to give back as well."

The Arthur R. and Kay J. Cummings Endowed Scholarship stands as a testament to a love story that began at Ferris State, echoing the enduring impact of education, shared experiences, and the desire to uplift future generations. Through this legacy, the Cummings ensure that their connection to Ferris extends beyond the boundaries of time, enriching the lives of students for years to come.
