Embracing One’s Roots: A Journey of Self-Discovery

By Leilani Sigsbey (642 words words - 4 minute read)

Navigating Life's Twists and Turns

Growing up without a mother, my father, Patrick, took on the monumental task of not only providing, but nurturing my growth. It was within the walls of our Traverse City home that I learned resilience, compassion, and the power of unwavering love. Together, we navigated life's twists and turns, finding strength in the bond we forged. This being my childhood, I learned to adapt with my environment.

A Unique Bond: Father and Daughter

While I didn't grow up with a mother, this absence provided space for a truly unique relationship to bloom with my dad. While having to grieve the love of his life, he also at that time had to raise the child they both wanted to have at the same time. His strength, love, and unwavering support became the cornerstone of my journey. Through his guidance, I learned that family isn't defined by conventional roles, but by the depth of the connections we share.

Lessons in Proactivity

Traverse City, with its changing seasons and steadfast beauty, served as a backdrop for my lessons in proactivity. In this environment, I discovered the power of taking charge of my own narrative, of being the architect of my dreams. When seasons changed, it felt that I was also developing the image I perceive of myself now. With my birthday being in the colorful fall month, November, I would always take walks through the woodsy trails in my backyard and I would reflect on what I have accomplished throughout this past year and how I have completed another year of my life. It was here that I realized that beginnings are not dictated by circumstances, but by the choices we make.

Colors of Dedication and Hard Work

My journey is painted with hues of determination and dedication. Traverse City summers hold one unmissable event: the Sara Hardy Farmer's Market. Here, I reunite with Dave, my "Cheese Family Member," whose story has intertwined with mine. The market's vitality and the familiar faces of local vendors create a sanctuary of connection.

Serving a Calling, Not Just a Pastime

For me, community service isn't just a pastime; it's a calling. As an RA at North Hall and the proud President of PRSSA, giving back to my college community brings me immense joy. Yet, my roots run deeper, extending to my role as a mentor for the Traverse City Central High School Robotics Team 1711, The RAPTORS. This team, where I discovered purpose and forged lifelong friendships during my high school years, is now my way of paying it forward.

Charting a Course Forward

As I reflect on this Traverse City journey, I realize that it's not just a physical landscape; it's a mirror reflecting my growth as an individual. The challenges, the victories, and the moments of quiet introspection have all contributed to the person I am today.

An Anchor in Big Rapids

A hop away in Big Rapids, my Aunt Linda and Uncle Doug offer an anchor of support. They've been my steadfast pillars, providing comfort and wisdom whenever I've needed it. Their nearness provides a sense of belonging that words can hardly express.

The Echo of Childhood Whispers

In the quiet moments, I reminisce about a childhood memory. My older relatives playfully remarked on my "nimble fingers," hinting at a future as a surgeon or pianist. Back then, it seemed like a whimsical notion. Now, the idea of mastering the piano holds a certain allure. The complexity of the instrument intrigues me, and I wonder if destiny whispered a clue all those years ago.

So, here's to the genuine moments, the dreams, and the beautiful threads that weave the fabric of my life. Traverse City, you're not just my hometown; you're the heartbeat of my story. Here's to the chapters waiting to be written and the adventures that lie ahead!
